A time of transition…

After eight years leading VMP, I have decided to step aside as CEO. I will be transitioning into the role of Chairman, while Cameron — one of my co-founders and previously our Chief Brand Officer — takes over as CEO moving forward.

When we launched VMP nearly eight years ago, we didn’t have a grand plan, money, or know what it meant to start (much less build) a company. All we had was a sincere passion and a genuine desire to bring people together through music.

For eight years, we’ve been heads down, pushing ourselves forward inch by inch, day by day. We’ve weathered countless storms that would have killed most companies. But through our grit, our hard work, and our belief, we persevered.

The work has paid off, too. What started as a passion-fueled side project has grown into something bigger than I ever could have imagined.

Today, VMP reaches hundreds of thousands of music lovers around the world. It brings attention to some of the most incredible artists and their stories history has to offer. We’ve built a team of some of the most talented individuals I’ve had the pleasure of working with…. I could go on forever…

If that isn’t bringing people together through music, then what is?

What’s next for me?

There’s so much to celebrate in this transition, and my work at VMP is not done yet. It’s obvious our mission means something to the world, and because of that, I know our impact will only grow from here. As Chairman, I’ll continue supporting the team in furthering our mission and finding new & unique ways to help people explore music together.

At the same time, eight years spent doing anything is a long time for anyone, and the line between self and work is easily blurred. Like many founding CEOs, I’ve built my identity around VMP. There’s a certain sense of self that I feel I’m missing. I’m excited to use the extra time this transition will afford me to recharge, explore additional opportunities, and put energy towards other things I’m excited about.

I’ve always said, and I continue to believe, VMP’s mission is bigger than any single individual. I look back on the last eight years with so much pride knowing that what we’ve accomplished is due largely to the passion and unconditional support demonstrated by our community, our team (past and present), and all of the people that surround VMP. To all of you, whoever you are, wherever you are, and regardless of the role you’ve played in this journey: thank you. I would not be who (or where) I am today, nor would VMP. The best part is we’ve only just begun!

Keep spinnin’

Matt

To other founders, CEOs, and startups: We are a product of the people around us. I’ve benefited greatly from the unconditional support of countless mentors and advisors. If I can be of any help to you in navigating your own journey, regardless of what it has to do with, please do not hesitate to reach out.
